How do I find out what books, journals and other material the library has?

Library material can be located by using the online catalog. Search the catalog to locate books, videos, e-books, journals and other material owned by the library. The library also provides full-text electronic access to a variety of reference material and over 15,000 print journals through databases such as JSTOR, ProQuest, BioOne and EBSCO. Click here to determine if a journal is available online.

Can I access the library databases from a computer not located in the library?

The library catalog and databases are available from any computer on-campus. If you are off-campus, you will need a login and password to access the databases. To obtain a login and password please see the electronic resources page. The logins and passwords change periodically, so check with a librarian if you encounter any problems.

What do I need to check out material?

You must have your University of Pikeville ID Card to check out materials or to print articles.

Can I renew materials without returning to the library?

Yes, materials may be renewed online by visiting the online catalog. Click on the “Patron Information” button and log in using your last name and the library ID number located on your Smart Card. Click on the check box next to each item you want to renew. Then click on “Renew Items.” Make sure a new date due is displayed for each item you are renewing. If an item does not renew, please call the library at  606.218.5617. Items may not renew if one of the following conditions exists:

  • A fine of $25 or more is owed to the library.
  • The item has been renewed too many times.
  • Someone has placed a hold on the item.

Interlibrary loan books will not renew. A request for interlibrary loan renewal must be made using the online form or by talking to the interlibrary loan staff person at 606.218.5620.

What if I need a book or journal article that is not available at the library?

Interlibrary loan service is available for current UPIKE and KYCOM students, faculty and staff. Interlibrary loan obtains material from other libraries within the state and country. Forms for interlibrary loan are kept at the Circulation Desk, but we recommend using the online forms. For assistance, please contact the library staff.

What does it mean when a book or article is on reserve?

The library’s reserve collection includes books, journal articles, videos and other material selected by instructors for use in specific courses. The loan period for these items varies but is generally quite short.

Where do I go if I need assistance doing research in the library?

Librarians and library staff will be happy to provide assistance in using library resources. You can ask for help at the Circulation Desk or Reference Desk. During regular library hours, assistance is also available by telephone, e-mail and instant messenger.
