UPIKE Launches New Master of Science in Biomedical Sciences

The University of Pikeville-Kentucky College of Osteopathic Medicine (KYCOM) has announced the launch of a new Master of Science in Biomedical Sciences (MBS), a fully online graduate program designed to prepare students for medical school, dental school, optometry programs and other professional health careers.

The 30-credit, non-thesis program is delivered in an accelerated eight-week course format and can be completed in two years. Designed with flexibility in mind, the program allows students to strengthen their academic credentials while gaining advanced knowledge in biomedical and clinical sciences.

“This program is intentionally structured to meet students where they are and help them move forward,” said KYCOM Dean Joe Kingery, D.O., MBA, FACOFP, FAAFP. “Whether a student is looking to enhance their academic profile for professional school or advance within the health care field, this degree provides the scientific foundation, advising support and flexibility they need to succeed.”

The MBS curriculum emphasizes scientific reasoning, ethical decision-making and applied research skills. In addition to core courses in applied genetics, research and biostatistics, students may choose from a range of interdisciplinary electives in areas such as leadership, social policy, mental health and addiction policy, artificial intelligence for communication strategies and crisis communication. These electives allow students to tailor their education to align with personal interests and career goals.

The program is designed for recent college graduates pursuing careers in healthcare, individuals seeking to strengthen their applications to professional programs, and working professionals seeking upward mobility in medical or health-related fields. Students benefit from supportive faculty with expertise in biomedical and clinical sciences, as well as career development and professional advising throughout the program.

Admissions are conducted on a rolling basis. Applicants must hold a bachelor’s degree from a regionally accredited institution, preferably in a science-related field, with a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.75. Required prerequisite coursework includes general biology, general chemistry and organic chemistry with labs. Additional materials include a personal statement, resume or CV, letters of recommendation and official transcripts.

The priority application deadline is May 1. Applications will continue to be reviewed until all program seats are filled. For more information about the Master of Science in Biomedical Sciences at KYCOM or to apply, visit upike.edu/mbms.
