UPIKE alumni and friends reconnect at The Greenbrier

The University of Pikeville (UPIKE) Alumni Association recently traveled to White Sulphur Springs, W.Va., to reconnect with alumni and friends at The Greenbrier Resort for a fun-filled few days.

UPIKE President Burton J. Webb, First Lady Kay Webb and Vice President for Advancement and Alumni Relations David Hutchens welcomed guests to enjoy many activities and amenities at The Greenbrier throughout their stay. The university hosted an intimate four-course dinner in the Greenbrier’s Crystal Room on Valentine’s Day. Attendees received specially designed UPIKE pillows as gifts.

Sandra Brown, close friend of the university, had an unforgettable stay and is excited to attend the event next year.

“A weekend at The Greenbrier had been on my bucket list for several years,” said Brown. “The Greenbrier met all my expectations and more. It is a magical place that takes you back in history with beautiful decor. The entire resort embraces true southern hospitality.”

UPIKE alumna and Chicago native Annita Green (‘16) served as guest speaker during the activities. Green came to UPIKE as a first-generation college student in 2012. She worked in the Office of Admissions as an admissions student assistant and competed on UPIKE’s dance team. She also served as Treasurer of IMPACT, was a member of the UPIKE Community Service Group and was the first female president of UPIKE’s Black Student Union.

Green shared a heartwarming story with guests about her experience moving from Chicago to attend UPIKE as a freshman and her mother’s positive influence on her decision to further her education.

“I was lucky enough to have a wonderful mother who stressed the importance of education early on in my life and guided me to take that leap of faith to move to the mountains of Eastern Kentucky to pursue my dreams,” said Green. “If there is anything I can say about being a Bear, it is that we are courageous, we put in the work and we are family. There was a blessing in these hills that only my mother knew during that time, and for that, I am thankful.”

Webb expressed that Green captured the essence of what UPIKE is today.

“The University of Pikeville is about transformation. It is about the lives that come in one shape or form and become something completely different within four years. Whether it is knowledge, skills, or disposition, things change at UPIKE,” said Webb. “The students we bring here are individuals who possess a certain amount of grit. If we can continue to attract those types of students to the university, they will have the chance of transformation.”

The university’s alumni network includes more than 12,000 active members who continue to show their Bear pride and commitment to supporting the UPIKE community at memorable alumni events and activities hosted throughout the United States.
