The University of Pikeville (UPIKE) Patton College of Education (PCOE) recently recognized graduating teacher candidates and outstanding student award recipients during its annual teacher education reception, celebrating the dedication and achievements of future educators.

Held on April 23, the event welcomed graduates, family members, P-12 educators, school administrators and members of the UPIKE community to honor students as they reached a significant milestone in their academic and professional journeys.

The evening opened with remarks from the Dean of PCOE Coletta Parsley, Ed.D. UPIKE President Burton J. Webb, Ph.D., and Executive Vice President and Chief Strategy Officer Lori Werth, Ed.D., also addressed attendees.

The highlight of the celebration was the candidate pinning ceremony, where faculty members recognized teacher education graduates as they prepared to enter the profession. During the ceremony, Associate Professor of Education Theresa Dawahare, M.Ed., led graduates in the Educator’s Pledge, reaffirming their commitment to serving future generations through education.

PCOE also recognized several students for exceptional achievement. Scarlett MaKenzie Anderson of Raccoon, Ky., received the Rediford Damron Teaching Excellence Award in Elementary Education. Alayna Faith Coleman of Pikeville, Ky., received the Rediford Damron Teaching Excellence Award in Middle/Secondary Education. Sarah Brooke Justice of Phyllis, Ky., received the PCOE Award for Most Professional Growth.

Graduates also presented appreciation gifts to their cooperating teachers in recognition of the mentorship and support that helped shape their educational experiences.

The event concluded with remarks from Vice President of Academic Affairs Marisa Greer, Ph.D., and a final charge from Parsley to graduates as they prepare to begin the next chapter of their professional journeys.

“All of our teacher education program graduates demonstrate that great teachers are made with heart, hard work and purpose,” said Parsley. “We are immensely proud of every one of them. We also applaud our award recipients whose achievements shine a spotlight on the remarkable educators they have become.”
