UPIKE nursing faculty Tauna Gulley, Ph.D., presented at the 28th International Nursing Research Congress in Dublin, Ireland. Gulley is an associate professor of nursing and RN-BSN coordinator at the University of Pikeville-Elliott School of Nursing.

Her presentation, Developing a Collaboration to Promote Interprofessional Education (IPE) for Baccalaureate Nursing Students, described the university’s initiative to provide opportunities for students from various disciplines to work together on a specific case developed by faculty from the represented disciplines. Students from the following disciplines were represented during IPE activities on campus during the last academic year: nursing, social work, medical and pharmacy. Optometry students will participate in the spring of 2018. 

The goal of IPE activities are to provide opportunities for students from various professions to develop effective communication skills, to develop mutual trust and shared values, to gain an understanding of roles and responsibilities of team members, and to demonstrate effective team building principles that support the development of a plan of care, delivery of the plan and evaluation of the care. The ultimate goal of the project is to promote positive health outcomes for individuals and families in the region.
