UPIKE Taking Applications for Summer Civic Fellowship

The University of Pikeville (UPIKE) announces the launch of the Allegheny Civic Fellowship. Hosted by the Center for Public Service, the Allegheny Civic Fellowship is a selective, three-week summer seminar hosted at UPIKE for rising high school students, in partnership with students from Yale University.

The Allegheny Civic Fellowship offers students the opportunity to strengthen their academic writing and critical thinking skills through close readings of foundational texts and discussions of democracy, justice and American ideals. Led by Yale undergraduates and UPIKE faculty, this nonresidential program invites students to join a cohort of thoughtful peers for daily lectures, seminars, writing labs and guest speakers.

Assistant Professor of Political Science and the Founding Director of the Center for Public Service Jeffery Tyler Syck, Ph.D., will direct the program.

“The Allegheny Civic Fellowship provides a unique opportunity for young people in Appalachia to gain the necessary skills for leadership,” said Syck. “We here at UPIKE are pleased to do our part both to prepare high school students for college and a life of service to their community.”

The Allegheny Civic Fellowship will be accepting applications until June 15 but priority will be given to applications received before May 31.
