The University of Pikeville-Kentucky College of Osteopathic Medicine (UPIKE-KYCOM) is pleased to recognize nine students who have received funding for research projects through the UPIKE-KYCOM Summer Research Fellowship Program (SRP).

The following student physicians and their mentors were selected from KYCOM: Matthew Talmage and mentor, Kristen Carroll, M.D., Shriners Hospitals for Children- Salt Lake City, Utah; Lyudmyla Shymkiv and mentor, Joshua Watson, Ph.D., KYCOM; Taylor Reardon and mentor, Brandon Miller, M.D., Ph.D., University of Kentucky; Raquel Rudy and mentor, Joshua Watson, Ph.D., KYCOM; Christina Campbell and mentor, Kartick Pramanik, Ph.D., KYCOM; Steven Vanover and mentor, George Pantalos, Ph.D., University of Louisville; David Cline and mentor, Kartick Pramanik, Ph.D., KYCOM; Caleb Marsh and mentor, Kimberly E. Inman, Ph.D., Shawnee State University; Preston Rippe and mentor, Erin Baker, Ph.D., Beaumont Health, Department of Orthopedic Research.

“This is a great opportunity for KYCOM students who wish to participate and obtain experience in biomedical, clinical, experimental or translational research,” said Assistant Professor of Pharmacology and Research Committee Chair at KYCOM, Pramanik. Research projects can focus on medical science, community health, clinical or osteopathic orientation. All current KYCOM students who are enrolled at the time of the award and in good academic standing are eligible to apply.

Pramanik says research is a cornerstone of KYCOM’s mission and sets students on a path for learning and discovery.

“The program seeks to reinforce KYCOM’s mission statement by encouraging students to participate in research and cultivate an appreciation of lifelong scholarly activity by providing students with the opportunity to learn research techniques and practices,” added Pramanik.

KYCOM students are encouraged to apply for the summer research program through the KYCOM Student Research Application. Students selected for the summer research fellowship will receive a stipend of up to $3000. Students work closely with a mentor faculty member throughout the summer. Whether their faculty mentor is within KYCOM or outside the university, students work with very knowledgeable faculty that will assist them and assure that the research is successful.

Once their research is concluded, students present their work at national or international conferences and KYCOM’s Research Day each March. Prospective students are encouraged to read the faculty research tab to help them discover which research interests them.
