UPIKE’s Weber Art Gallery features a reflective and inspiring exhibit that spans 30 years

The University of Pikeville (UPIKE) Weber Art Gallery will be showcasing one of its own beginning April 1 through May 6. “Intermission” will feature a collection of work from Professor of Art Patricia Kowalok. The exhibit will showcase Kowalok’s work from her 30-year career and allow the artist to reflect on the passage of time and the transition to a new future. The exhibit’s title, “Intermission,” signals the space of time between teaching and retirement.

Organizing this exhibit afforded me the opportunity to reflect on where I have come from (artistically speaking) and where I am,” said Kowalok. “What I have discovered reminded me that Art—making it, seeing it, thinking about it–is a bone-deep component of who I am.”

“Through the organizing and reflecting for this exhibit, I am reminded that I love the excitement of making marks—that there is the potential for anything as I take pencil or ink or paint to a clean sheet of paper,” added Kowalok. “I think that making art is making magic.”

Kowalok says through this exhibit, she has been reminded that true art lies in the possibilities and the “what if” that is deeply embedded in each of us.

There will be an artist’s reception on April 13 from 4:30 to 6:00 p.m. The exhibit and conversation will also be a part of UPIKE’s convocation series on April 19, beginning at 11:00 a.m. There will also be a “Meet the Artist” event associated with the Remake Learning Festival on April 28 from 5:00 to 6:30 p.m. All three events will be held in the Weber Art Gallery located in the Record Memorial Building on UPIKE’s campus.

Visitors may also contact Kowalok at (606) 218-5758 or Petra Carroll, M.F.A., associate professor of art at (606) 218-5759 for additional gallery hours.
