UPIKE Launches New Bachelor of Arts in Theatre

The University of Pikeville (UPIKE) is proud to announce the launch of its new Bachelor of Arts in Theatre, a dynamic and hands-on program designed to elevate artistic expression throughout Central Appalachia. Rooted in performance, design and technical theatre, the new major blends creative training with professional development and meaningful community engagement.

Students will gain real-world experience from their first semester, working both on stage and behind the scenes. Annual program offerings include a musical, spoken plays, the popular 24-Hour Play Festival and multiple opportunities for student-directed productions. This immersive structure prepares graduates for careers not only in the performing arts, but in every field that benefits from strong communication, leadership and teamwork.

“The real magic of theatre education and training is the positive growth for the individual, UPIKE and the communities,” said Stephanie Richards, MFA, assistant professor of theatre. “Talent runs deep through these mountains, and now UPIKE has a foundation in place to develop this talent into skills that will enable success up to the professional level of theatre or any other chosen career.”

“College is a time for growth and experimentation, as well as a time to pick up essential skills. A degree in theatre at UPIKE provides the opportunity for all three, whether in preparation for a career in the performing arts or as a complement to any career,” said Professor of English and Theatre Jenna Steigerwalt, Ph.D. “Theatre is the ultimate team sport, and UPIKE’s program is a welcoming community in which students thrive.”

The program also emphasizes technical theatre, including set construction, lighting and sound design and stage management. These skills can open doors across numerous creative and production-focused careers.

Through established partnerships with Artists Collaborative Theatre, The Appalachian Center for the Arts, the Aracoma Story and other regional organizations, students have access to robust performance, mentorship and networking opportunities. Scholarships for incoming theatre majors are available.

The new Bachelor of Arts in Theatre represents UPIKE’s continued commitment to growing arts education in the region while supporting students as they discover and develop their creative voices.
