The University of Pikeville (UPIKE) is expanding opportunities for students pursuing careers in social work with the introduction of two accelerated pathways designed to help students earn both a Bachelor of Social Work (BSW) and a Master of Social Work (MSW) in significantly less time. The new 2+1 and 4+1 BSW+MSW programs offer flexible, affordable routes to advanced social work practice through online, in-person, and hybrid formats.
The 2+1 pathway is tailored for community college graduates and students who already hold an associate degree. In just two years, they can complete their BSW and then immediately enter UPIKE’s one-year MSW program. The 2+1 program offers a seamless transfer process for community college students, providing support from the moment they transition to UPIKE to MSW completion. Students gain real-world experience through practicum placements in community settings, preparing them for leadership roles in clinical, policy or administrative fields.
The 4+1 pathway is designed for current undergraduate students, including traditional first-year students and nontraditional learners, who wish to earn their BSW and MSW in just five years. Students who meet advanced standing admission criteria after completing an accredited BSW program are also eligible to complete the MSW in one year.
“Our new BSW + MSW pathways offer flexible, efficient options for students at different stages of life and education,” said Director of UPIKE’s Bachelor of Social Work Program Ashton Bartley, MSW. “Both options prepare students for advanced roles in clinical practice, mental health, addiction treatment, and more, opening doors to meaningful, impactful careers.”
With built-in academic support, students work closely with advisors and faculty to ensure they meet MSW admissions requirements while progressing toward graduation. Both pathways reflect UPIKE’s commitment to accessible, career-focused education. For more information about the 2+1 and 4+1 BSW+MSW programs at UPIKE, visit upike.edu.
