UPIKE engages alumni in Country Music Capital

The University of Pikeville recently traveled to Nashville, Tenn., to reconnect with alumni and friends over dinner at Kayne Prime Steakhouse, located in The Gulch, an upscale neighborhood known for its chic hotels, high-end fashion boutiques and trendsetting restaurants.

In attendance to dine with guests and update them on all things UPIKE were President Burton J. Webb, First Lady Kay Webb and Vice President for Advancement David Hutchens.

UPIKE alumni and former board member Twilia Charles-Duff (‘82, ’87) joined with her mother, a former Alumni Board President Sarah Ray Chinn (‘64), to enjoy the evening where guests commemorated her 89th birthday during the event. Chinn served as the alumni board president in 1967 and was responsible for establishing the university’s alumni chapters.

“We worked on a shoestring budget,” recalled Chinn. “The university was fortunate to have a few supporters back then that had a few dollars in their pockets that believed in what we were establishing and were willing to invest in our efforts.”

“Our alumni events are a legacy of Sarah’s work,” said Hutchens.

Charles-Duff enjoyed the excellent event with her mother and encouraged alumni to attend these events.

“We had a fabulous evening catching up with old UPIKE friends and making new ones. Mom is still talking about her birthday surprise, which made her feel special,” said Charles-Duff. “President Webb is doing big things at the university, and attending these events is a great way to meet him and stay connected. We look forward to attending more events in the future.”

Webb thanked the guests for attending and spoke about the university’s growth.

The university’s alumni network includes more than 12,000 active members who continue to show their Bear pride and commitment to supporting the UPIKE community at memorable alumni events and activities hosted throughout the United States.
