Daniel Dockery, an Army ROTC (Reserve Officers Training Corps) cadet at the University of Pikeville, was recently awarded the German Armed Forces Proficiency Badge (German: Das Abzeichen für Leistungen im Truppendienst) for his outstanding performance in a two-day competition that tested skill, endurance and fitness.
The UPIKE cadet was chosen to compete at Indiana University against 334 soldiers and cadets from 23 universities in seven grueling events. Soldiers who passed all events were awarded gold, silver or bronze medals based on their performance in each event. Dockery was one of only one-third of participants to achieve the gold standard in all events.
“In the moment it was rough but in the end, we walked away better soldiers,” said Dockery. A decoration of the Bundeswehr, the Armed Forces of the Federal Republic of Germany, the German Armed Forces Proficiency Badge may also be awarded to allied soldiers. The highly sought-after badge is one of a few approved awards for the United States Military uniform.
Dockery, of Duffield, Va., is a biology major entering his junior year. He served four years in the Kentucky National Guard before joining UPIKE’s Army ROTC program.
