The University of Pikeville (UPIKE), in partnership with the Appalachian School of Law (ASL), is proud to announce the launch of a new Master of Legal Studies (MLS) program, designed to provide working professionals with a flexible, comprehensive understanding of the American legal system. Classes begin in October 2025, and the program is fully online.
This collaboration between UPIKE and ASL reflects a shared commitment to expanding access to legal education throughout the Appalachian region. The MLS program equips students with foundational legal knowledge applicable to a wide range of fields, including human resources, compliance, healthcare, business and criminal justice.
While not a law degree, the program offers practical insight into core legal areas such as employment law, contracts, legal writing and constitutional principles. It also provides an accessible pathway into the legal profession, offering many of the benefits of legal education without the significant time and financial investment required to attend law school.
Justin Hazlewood, Ph.D., program director and UPIKE associate professor of criminal justice, emphasized the real-world application of the degree.
“This program was built with today’s professionals in mind,” said Hazlewood. “Whether you’re in HR, compliance or another field where legal knowledge gives you a competitive edge, the MLS offers both the academic rigor and the flexibility you need to succeed.”
ASL President and Dean David J. Western underscored the importance of broadening access to legal education through this innovative model.
“At Appalachian School of Law, our mission has always been rooted in expanding access to legal education for individuals who are passionate about serving their communities,” said Western. “Our new partnership with UPIKE establishes the launch of the Master of Legal Studies program, which provides a high-quality, flexible academic experience for students who may not be pursuing a traditional law degree, but who are equally committed to making a difference in the legal and professional landscape of our region. We are proud to help create new pathways for leadership, service and justice through this important collaboration.”
Courses in the program include Employment Law & Workplace Regulation, Contractual Law & Drafting, and Legal Skills, Research, Analysis & Writing. Students can tailor the pace of study to meet their personal and professional needs, either completing the degree in only one year or extending it to two years.
“The Master of Legal Studies at the University of Pikeville offers an exciting opportunity for students to broaden both their intellectual and professional horizons,” said Jeffery Tyler Syck, Ph.D., assistant professor of politics and director of UPIKE’s Center for Public Service. “By engaging students in the history, theory and practice of law, UPIKE will be living up to its lifelong mission of service to the region.”
Admissions requirements include a bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution, a minimum GPA of 2.75, submission of a personal statement, two professional letters of recommendation and a résumé or CV. GRE and GMAT scores are not required for applicants who meet specific academic or professional criteria.
