Alumni and friends enjoy a day at the races

The University of Pikeville recently joined with alumni and friends for a fun-filled day of Thoroughbred racing at the Keeneland racecourse in Lexington, Ky. Guests were entertained with an elegant lunch and watched the races from a spectacular vantage point high atop the fifth floor in the Keeneland Room, once remodeled for the Queen of England, that included a private patio, televisions, private Mutuel tellers and racing programs.

In attendance to dine with guests were First Lady Kay Webb, Vice President for Advancement and Alumni Relations David Hutchens, and the event hosts Doug and Felicia Branham.

The hosts were gifted with a few Keeneland souvenirs, including a framed photo from a local artist and a Keeneland clock pillow.

UPIKE alum Sharman Roe ‘85 appreciated mingling with friends from different graduating classes and reminiscing about their time on “the hill.”

“It was wonderful catching up with UPIKE staff about what is going on at the university,” said Roe. “A highlight from our day was spending time with my former accounting professor Dr. Howard Roberts and enjoying the delicious food.”

Alumna and UPIKE Director of Stewardship & Donor Engagement Brooke Thacker ‘04 enjoyed first-class hospitality during her first-ever visit to the Keeneland racecourse.

“Keeneland was such a joyful event,” said Thacker. “It was fun to look at the statistics and guess which horse would cross the finish line first. The alumni events are a great way to meet new people and hear about their experiences. I look forward to attending more events in the future.”

The university’s alumni network includes more than 12,000 active members who continue to show their Bear pride and commitment to supporting the UPIKE community at memorable alumni events and activities hosted throughout the United States.
