Our Mission

The University of Pikeville is the leading higher education institution of Central Appalachia. Founded in 1889, UPIKE remains steadfast in our commitment to preparing students for the future while creating intellectual, cultural and economic opportunities for Appalachia. Maintaining our commitment to Christian principles, UPIKE recognizes the infinite worth of each person, respecting a variety of religious expressions.

Our President

“We are a progressive university in a progressive town. Pikeville is among a small number of cities in Appalachia that is growing, has a diverse economic base, and is moving into the 21st century. Add that to the abundance of outdoor recreational opportunities and you will find not only a place to learn, but also a place to live after college.

Dynamic and innovative leadership has brought recent changes in the administration of the university and significant investments to residence halls, academic programs and student services. Once students and parents come and walk through our safe community and inviting facilities, once they see our state-of-the-art education facilities, and once they sit in the shade of our great mountains they will agree that this is an exciting time to be part of the UPIKE family!”

Burton J. Webb, Ph.D./ President
