The University of Pikeville (UPIKE) Kentucky College of Optometry (KYCO) is pleased to welcome two optometrists who will begin advanced clinical training through KYCO-affiliated residency programs during the 2026-27 academic year.
This year’s incoming residents include Deanna Van Stavoren, O.D., who will complete a residency in pediatric eye care at KYCO, and Reina Garrett, O.D., a graduate of Southern College of Optometry, who will pursue an ocular disease residency at Milan Eye Center.
Residency training provides optometrists with opportunities to expand their clinical knowledge, gain specialized experience and further develop the skills necessary to provide exceptional patient care. Through KYCO’s affiliated residency programs, residents work alongside experienced clinicians and faculty while serving patients throughout the region.
“It is such an honor to complete my residency in pediatric eye care at the Kentucky College of Optometry,” said Van Stavoren. “The mission of serving rural communities through a strong focus on outreach is deeply important to me, and I am grateful for the opportunity to continue being a part of it. I look forward to continuing to grow my knowledge and making a difference.”
“I chose to pursue an ocular disease residency to become a more well-rounded clinician, and Milan Eye Center offers the ideal environment to grow those skills,” said Garrett. “I am excited for the year ahead and the opportunity to expand my clinical knowledge.”
“Our residency placements reflect our commitment to supporting the next generation of healthcare professionals through quality clinical training and strong collaborative partnerships,” said KYCO Director of Continuing Education and Residencies and Professor Eilene E. Kinzer, O.D., MEd VFL, FAAO. “Each new class of residents begins their programs with a solid foundation and a shared dedication to providing compassionate, high-quality patient care as they continue to develop professionally to deliver excellent patient care.”
These residency experiences reflect KYCO’s commitment to developing highly skilled clinicians while strengthening access to specialized vision care throughout Appalachia and other underserved communities. By combining advanced training with hands-on patient care, the programs help prepare optometrists to make a lasting impact in the communities they serve.
