The University of Pikeville – Tanner College of Dental Medicine (TCDM) has reached a significant milestone with the announcement of its initial accreditation by the Commission on Dental Accreditation (CODA). This recognition paves the way for TCDM to welcome its inaugural class of students and fulfill its mission of preparing the next generation of dental professionals.
Initial accreditation affirms that TCDM’s proposed programs and curriculum meet rigorous national standards and that the college is prepared to deliver high-quality education and clinical training as operations begin.
“Receiving accreditation from CODA marks a historic accomplishment for the Tanner College of Dental Medicine,” said Dean of TCDM, Jill Keaton, DMD. “It affirms the strength of our vision to prepare compassionate, skilled dental professionals dedicated to serving rural and underserved communities, while expanding access to high-quality oral healthcare in Central Appalachia.”
TCDM’s first class of students is scheduled to begin in June 2026. The college is committed to addressing evolving oral health needs locally and nationally through a strong academic foundation, community-centered programs and a curriculum that integrates innovation, research and service.
“We are honored that the Tanner College of Dental Medicine has received initial accreditation from CODA, a milestone that underscores the excellence of our program and its alignment with national standards,” said Executive Vice President and Chief Strategy Officer Lori Werth, Ph.D. “This achievement ensures our students will be well-prepared to deliver exceptional care while addressing the critical oral health needs of Eastern Kentucky and beyond. It represents a significant step toward our mission of improving health outcomes and expanding access to care in underserved communities.”
Accreditation ensures that TCDM graduates will be eligible for licensure and ready to provide comprehensive, compassionate care. The college also envisions building strong partnerships with healthcare organizations, advancing access to dental services and fostering opportunities for groundbreaking research.
