Each year on Martin Luther King Jr. Day, the University of Pikeville (UPIKE) faculty, staff, students and the City of Pikeville reflect on his life and legacy. This year, to commemorate the day, an MLK “Dreams in Motion” celebration brunch will be held on Saturday, January 21, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. in Booth Auditorium to foster remembrance, academic development and renewed commitments to nurture belonging.
Through a range of activities, the MLK celebration brunch will include panel discussions and the following acclaimed speakers: Lisa Sizemore, City of Pikeville business retention and expansion manager, Keisha Hunt-Eary, diversity liaison at Southeastern Kentucky Community and Technical College, Kevin Harrison, interim director of diversity at Big Sandy Community and Technical College, Robert Musick, chaplain and faculty member at UPIKE, Rachel Breckenridge, faculty member at UPIKE, and student leaders from the UPIKE Diversity Leadership Academy, the Kentucky College of Optometry and the Kentucky College of Osteopathic Medicine Diversity Committees.
“MLK day continues to be an important commemorative moment for the university and the community,” says Katrina Rugless, director of diversity and international affairs at UPIKE. “The brunch will provide an opportunity for each of us to learn, grow and continue the work of Dr. King in our own small way.”
UPIKE invites all community and university members to observe and recognize Dr. King’s commitment to social justice and global peace. Following the brunch, the community and attendees are encouraged to attend the UPIKE men’s and women’s basketball games at the UPIKE gym.
