UPIKE director of bands published in Bluegrass Music News

University of Pikeville Director of Bands Michael Phillips, Ph.D., was recently published in the spring 2019 issue of Bluegrass Music News, an official publication of the Kentucky Music Education Association (KMEA) that serves as a resource for music educators at the K-12 and university levels. The article focuses on engaging secondary music students in research.

Phillips published the article in collaboration with Anthony Veiga, director of bands at APW High School in Parish, NY, to encourage music educators to involve music students in research concepts in the classroom.

Phillips holds a doctoral degree in music education and was the 2018-2019 recipient of the KMEA District 9 Teacher of the Year award. Veiga earned a graduate degree in music education and was recently a Master Artist Workshop Series (MAWS) guest at UPIKE. As a MAWS guest, Veiga performed with the UPIKE Wind Band and worked with bands in Eastern Kentucky. Phillips and Veiga are active clinicians in instrumental music education and work with K-12 and university programs nationwide. They are individually active in research and other professional activities.
