1/21/2026 Preparedness Update

We want to share a proactive winter weather update as we head into the weekend. A winter storm system is forecasted to move into our region January 24–25. While forecasts are still developing and specific impacts may shift, this system could bring snow and/or ice accumulation and hazardous travel conditions.

This message is not meant to create concern—only to support preparedness and good decision-making. Winter weather is something we can navigate well when we plan ahead.

WHAT WE KNOW RIGHT NOW

  • A winter storm is expected to impact our region Saturday–Sunday (Jan. 24–25)
  • Forecast details (timing, totals, and ice potential) are still evolving
  • Travel conditions may become difficult at points during the weekend

WHAT THE UNIVERSITY IS DOING

The University is actively preparing and monitoring the storm. The UPIKE Campus Emergency Response Team has been activated and is actively preparing for this winter weather event.

UPIKE is actively preparing and monitoring the storm by:

  • Tracking updated forecasts and public safety advisories
  • Coordinating with campus partners (Facilities, Residence Life, Public Safety, and Student Affairs)
  • Reviewing operational readiness and response procedures
  • Preparing to provide timely updates if conditions impact campus operations

WHAT YOU CAN DO NOW (PREPAREDNESS TIPS)

We encourage everyone to take a few simple steps now:

BE READY WHERE YOU ARE

  • Have basic necessities available for the weekend (food, water, medications, hygiene items)
  • Charge phones/devices and keep chargers accessible
  • Keep a flashlight available in the unlikely event of a power interruption

STOCK YOUR ROOM LIKE YOU MIGHT NEED TO “STAY PUT” 24–48 HOURS

  • Grab-and-go snacks (granola bars, crackers, peanut butter)
  • Easy meals (microwave items, ramen, soup cups)
  • If you have dietary needs: plan ahead
    • A case of water per person (simple and cheap)
    • Prescription meds (don’t wait until the last minute)
    • Hygiene items (soap, deodorant, wipes, feminine products)
    • Warm coat + layers
    • Gloves, hat
    • Shoes with traction (avoid smooth soles)
    • Keep an extra hoodie/gloves in your bag

TRAVEL SMART

  • If you are traveling, consider adjusting plans to avoid the worst weather window
  • Forecast for BOTH locations + the entire route (not just your town)
  • Check Road conditions (state DOT sites, local sheriff/state police updates)
  • If driving, make sure your vehicle is prepared:
    • Full tank of fuel
    • Windshield washer fluid (winter blend)
    • Tires properly inflated + tread good
    • Wipers in good shape
    • Ice scraper
    • Warm clothing/blanket
    • Flashlight/headlamp + extra batteries
    • Phone charger
    • Water and Snacks
  • Let someone track you (Share your location)
  • Check in with family and friends.

STAY INFORMED

  • Monitor trusted weather sources and be ready to make decisions based on real-time conditions.

HOW UPDATES WILL BE SHARED

If weather conditions impact University operations, official updates will be shared through:

  • University email notifications
  • UPIKE website updates
  • University social media channels

Thank you for taking steps now to prepare and support a safe weekend for yourself and others. A prepared community is a strong community.
