Fugate named UPIKE’s director of library services

Edna Fugate has been named director of library services at the University of Pikeville. After a national search, Fugate, a Pike County native, was selected for the position in succession of Karen Evans who recently retired.

Fugate has worked the past eight years as archivist and reference librarian at UPIKE, a role in which she preserved material in the Special Collections and Archives of Allara Library, negotiated the acquisition of new collections, taught information literacy and archives-related classes, provided tours highlighting campus history, developed UPIKE Special Collections and Archive social media platforms, and led other initiatives. Additional positions Fugate’s held include research technician at UPIKE and librarian at the Pike County Public Library.

Fugate earned her bachelor’s degree in psychology/religion at UPIKE and a Master of Library and Information Science degree from the University of Kentucky. Her educational and training background also includes having attended the Harvard University Graduate School of Education to study library leadership in a digital age and completing an internship at the Library of Congress.

A certified archivist, Fugate has served as Chair and Chair Emeritus for the Kentucky Council on Archives, is a member of the Kentucky Digital Library (KDL) and is Board Chair of the Big Sandy Heritage Museum. She also chaired KDL’s Subcommittee on Metadata Standards and is a graduate of the Southeast Kentucky Chamber of Commerce’s Patton Leadership Institute.

Fugate looks forward to advancing library services at UPIKE.

“I am excited to move into this new role,” she said. “I look forward to expanding collaboration with campus and our local community to build on Frank M. Allara Library’s commitment to information literacy.”
