UPIKE Band Program History

The University of Pikeville has a storied tradition of excellence in music performing and serving in the community for nearly 100 years. Music has shaped the UPIKE community in various ways from choirs, glee clubs, pep bands, and jazz bands and many other formats giving our students a sense of belonging within the music department.

Acting President Rediford Damron (1965 to 1967) created Pikeville College’s first large college band. In its infancy, the band program was well known in the community, giving numerous performances and even played in the Kentucky Derby Day Parade. Its talented graduates lead programs spanning from eastern Kentucky to southern Ohio.

UPIKE’s Band program continues the university’s rich musical history in changing the musical landscape of the region. With a commitment to innovation and creativity, UPIKE’s Band program has much to offer students, faculty, staff, alumni and the community.

Scholarships & Work Study Opportunities

Scholarships are available and amounts are based on ability, commitment to the program and fund availability. It is not required that scholarship recipients major or minor in music. Scholarship auditions can be arranged by contacting Bands@upike.edu. Students should prepare two short pieces that simply demonstrate their ability and sound.

Band work-study opportunities are also available for qualifying students. Prior instrumental music experience may be required and work-study tasks may vary. For more information contact, UPIKE’s Office of Student Financial Services.
