Responding to the needs of nursing education and health care in the region, the Elizabeth Akers Elliott associate degree in nursing program was established by the formerly named Pikeville College in 1983. The RN-BSN program was initiated in 2011 by the University of Pikeville in response to the increasingly complex health care needs of both the region and nation. In 2014, the division of nursing was reorganized to the Elliott School of Nursing with a dean of nursing as its administrative leader. The school of nursing now has an organizational reporting line to the provost of the university who in turn, has a direct reporting line to the president of the university.

The university's Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN) program and the RN-BSN program are programs offered by the Elliot School of Nursing. The ADN is a two-year program leading to an Associate of Science Degree, with a major in nursing. The ADN program also permits Licensed Practical Nurses (LPN) to earn an ADN in two semesters, once admitted to the LPN-RN program of study. The university’s ADN has approval status from the Kentucky Board of Nursing and has met all requirements to offer an ADN program.

The RN-BSN program leads to a Bachelor of Science Degree, with a major in nursing. The University of Pikeville RN-BSN program is accredited by the Accreditation Commission for Nursing Education (ACEN), 3343 Peachtree Road NE, Suite 850, Atlanta, Georgia 30326; telephone 404-975-5000;

Nursing Major - Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN)

Graduates of the ADN program are eligible to apply to take the National Council Licensure Examination for registered nursing (NCLEX-RN) upon application approval by the state board of nursing in which they plan to practice. An RN with an ADN is eligible to enroll in an RN-BSN completion or higher degree nursing program, contingent on the requirements of the University of Pikeville or transfer institution. An RN with an ADN is qualified as a provider of care, manager of care and member of the health care team.

Nursing Major - RN-BSN Completion Program of Study (RN-BSN)

The University of Pikeville offers one option to obtain a Bachelor of Science in Nursing Degree: the RN-BSN completion program, offered in an online format. The RN-BSN program is for registered nurses who have an associate’s degree or diploma from a state-approved pre-licensure RN program and hold an unrestricted RN license. The RN-BSN program prepares the RN for evidence-based client care delivery or advanced staff and leadership positions in diverse practice environments. Graduates of the RN-BSN program are provided the foundation for graduate level education, contingent on the graduate school's admission requirements.

In either the ADN or RN-BSN program, a required non-nursing course may be taken prior to admission. However, this does not guarantee admission to nursing. Nursing (NUR) courses can only be taken in a predetermined sequence after admission to the respective nursing program.

It is the policy of the university that no student shall be excluded from participating in, be denied the benefits of or be subjected to discrimination in any program sponsored by the university because of gender, race, religion, sexual orientation, age, handicap or national origin.
