Pikeville, Ky.
University of Pikeville Trustee Robert B. Sparks will be remembered for his kindness and compassion, a true servant leader who made a difference in the lives of others. Sparks, 84, passed away on Wednesday, Oct. 26, at his home in Carlisle, Ky.

On the board of trustees for 12 years, Sparks dedicated his time, talent and treasure to advancing the university’s mission and creating opportunities for students.

“Dr. Sparks was a dear friend of the university and he will be sorely missed,” said President Burton Webb. “His wealth of knowledge and ready smile always lightened the load in meetings of the board of trustees. We grieve his loss, but know that his faith offers the hope of a new life in Christ.”

Growing up in Toler, Ky., Sparks was called to serve in the United States Army during the Korean Conflict. Afterwards, he attended Pikeville College on a basketball scholarship before continuing his education at the University of Louisville School of Dentistry. Graduating in 1962 with a D.M.D. degree, he launched a dental practice that spanned more than 40 years.

As both civic leader and volunteer, Sparks’ passion for helping the people of Nicholas County led to his involvement in Rotary and his church, as well as community health care, economic development, housing, and parks and recreation projects.

Sparks is survived by his wife, Carol, his son and daughter, grandchildren, a brother, and a large number of nieces, nephews and extended family.

Visitation will be Friday, Oct. 28, from 5-8 p.m. at the Carlisle Christian Church located at 242 N. Locust Street, Carlisle, Ky. The funeral will be Saturday, Oct. 29, at 1 p.m. at the church. In lieu of flowers the family requests donations be made to Sparks Scholarship at the University of Pikeville. For more information visit
