UPIKE to inaugurate 21st president

The University of Pikeville will formally install Burton J. Webb, Ph.D., as the institution’s 21st president on Friday, Oct. 14, at 3 p.m. in Booth Auditorium.

Webb, who took office in January, was born and reared on a small farm in central Michigan. The child of teachers, he knew from an early age that education would play a significant role in his life.

He attended Olivet Nazarene University where he studied zoology and chemistry. Webb holds a Master’s Degree in biology from Ball State University and a Ph.D. in microbiology and immunology from the Indiana University, School of Medicine.

For many years Webb invested his life in teaching both undergraduate students at Indiana Wesleyan University and medical students at IU. In 2010, he accepted the position of vice president for academic affairs and dean of the faculty at Northwest Nazarene University in Nampa, Idaho.

He is married to Kay Webb, who holds a Ph.D. in counseling psychology. They have two adult children.

Inauguration events will embody the theme of the celebration, one UPIKE family – striving to serve. A President’s Prayer Breakfast is planned for Tuesday, Oct. 11, at 8 a.m., in Booth Auditorium, Record Memorial Building. Wednesday, Oct. 12, has been designated as a campus-wide “UPIKE Day of Service.”

The campus and community will come together on Friday, Oct. 13, for “A Grand Night for Singing: Celebrating Broadway’s Greatest Hits with Kelsea Webb” at 7 p.m., in Booth Auditorium. Admission is free with a donation of non-perishable food for Thankful Hearts Food Pantry.

On Saturday, Oct. 15, the campus will host the “UPIKE Serves 5K Run/Walk.” Registration will be held from 7:30-8:15 a.m. and the race begins at 8:30 a.m., at the Main Street Plaza of the East Kentucky Expo Center. Early registration is available at Pre-registration is $20 by Oct. 8. On-site registration is $25. Groups of 10 more, UPIKE students and youth can register for $10 each. All registration proceeds benefit the Scholar House of Central Appalachia.
