UPIKE presents literary awards

The University of Pikeville recently announced the winners of the Annual Writers’ Competition in the categories of critical writing, prose fiction, creative nonfiction and poetry.

Jillian Bailey of Pikeville won the Anna Loos prize for critical literary essay for her piece “Conscious Voices.” The Carrie D. Kirkman prize for fiction went to Dan Fraley of Olive Hill for his short story “The Chest.” Haley Johnson of Coal Grove, Ohio, earned the Ruby Elizabeth Fizer prize for creative nonfiction for her piece “Barbie and the Punkettes.” The Sylvia Trent Auxier prize for poetry was awarded to Brandon Lopez of Smyrna, Tenn., for his poem “Times at Church.”

Each student received $50 and a plaque. The winning pieces will be published on The Pikeville Review webpage this summer. The Pikeville Review is an annual print publication of contemporary Appalachian literature.
