UPIKE Weber Art Gallery to feature ‘Writing with Pictures’

Pikeville, KY
The University of Pikeville’s Weber Art Gallery is featuring “Writing with Pictures: The Planning, Process and Production of a Professional Illustrator,” an exhibit showcasing the artwork of Christopher Epling. The gallery showcases a variety of works by Epling, including children’s book illustrations, graphic novels and newspaper cartoons.

Based locally in Regina, Ky., Epling is the art director for both the St. Francis School of Assisi in Pikeville and the Challenger Learning Center of Hazard where he also serves as a board member. Epling is also staff editorial cartoonist for the Appalachian News-Express weekend edition and he recently began teaching as an adjunct professor at UPIKE within the film and media arts department.

“For some, art is the painting hanging on the wall. Maybe in a gallery. Maybe in a hotel room,” said Epling. “To others, art is more. Art is a way to share ideas, convey opinions, tell a story.”

Of this particular gallery collection, Epling says the exhibit is “a glimpse into my relationship with art.”

“The exhibit is meant to reveal the process in which Chris produces his finished illustrations,” said UPIKE Professor of Art Patricia Kowalok. “A viewer is shown how drafts are laid out, changes are made, and compositions are considered and reconsidered so that the viewer is shown—in a seemingly effortless way— completed stories. The door to the gallery is a door into the living, organic realm of the artist’s imagination where a world is in the process of being created.”

The exhibit is open through March 8. The community is invited to a reception for the artist on Friday, February 1, from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m.

The Weber Art Gallery is open Mondays from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., Tuesdays and Thursdays 8 a.m. to 12 p.m. and 1:30 to 5:30 p.m., Wednesdays 9 a.m. to 10 a.m. and 11 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., and Fridays 8 a.m. to 12 p.m. and 1 p.m. to 5:30 p.m.

The gallery is located on the second floor of Record Memorial Building on UPIKE’s campus. For more information or to schedule a visit outside of listed gallery hours, contact Petra Carroll, associate professor of art, at pcarroll@upike.edu or Kowalok at pkowalok@upike.edu.
