UPIKE Rocks to perform April 12

March 12, 2019 12:00 AM
Pikeville, KY
To wrap up a successful inaugural year, UPIKE Rocks, part of University of Pikeville Bands, is hosting a concert on Friday, April 12 at 7 p.m. on campus in Record Memorial Building (Booth Auditorium). The concert will showcase the talent of UPIKE Rocks musicians and incorporate the Mighty Five Drum Vibe and UPIKE Jazz.

UPIKE Rocks is a unique program conceived by Michael Phillips, Ph.D., director of bands, and directed by Phillips and Michael Bell, assistant director of bands/percussion. The program brings together guitar, bass and drum-set players who learn and play an array of music including country and southern rock as well as traditional pieces such as the Star-Spangled Banner, My Old Kentucky Home and the UPIKE Alma Mater. UPIKE Rocks encompasses niche musical groups including the BB Jam Band, which entertained UPIKE men’s and women’s basketball fans throughout the 2018-2019 season, as well as the Mighty Five Drum Vibe.

The Mighty Five Drum Vibe is the first step toward the creation of a UPIKE drum line, which includes five multi-tuned bass drums and made its debut with the BB Jam Band during basketball season. The drum program educates students on the concept of multiple bass drums and includes experienced percussionists as well as non-percussionists.
