UPIKE Opening Convocation Sept. 1

August 22, 2016 12:00 AM
Pikeville, Ky.
On a joyous September day in 1889, the doors of Pikeville Collegiate Institute opened for the very first time. David Blythe, a young Presbyterian minister and educator, had come to Pikeville to carry out the mission of the founders, Dr. William C. Condit and James P. Kendrick, who, along with the Ebenezer Presbytery, shared a vision to provide educational opportunities for the youth of the mountains.

For more than a century, the University of Pikeville has served the people of the region, and beyond, creating access and opportunity through learning. As the university begins its 127th academic year, the community is invited to the Opening Convocation on Thursday, Sept. 1, at 11 a.m. in Booth Auditorium, Record Memorial Building.

Officially welcoming students, professors will don their academic regalia for the formal occasion, which is led by the bearer of the ceremonial mace. The convocation address will be delivered by Burton Webb, Ph.D., president of the University of Pikeville.

Webb was born and reared on a small farm in central Michigan. The child of teachers, he knew from an early age that education would play a significant role in his life.

He attended Olivet Nazarene University where he studied zoology and chemistry. Webb holds a master’s degree in biology from Ball State University and a Ph.D. in microbiology and immunology from the Indiana University School of Medicine.

For many years Webb invested his life in teaching both undergraduate students at Indiana Wesleyan University and medical students at IU. In 2010, he accepted the position of vice president for academic affairs and dean of the faculty at Northwest Nazarene University in Nampa, Idaho.

Webb began serving as the University of Pikeville’s 21st president in January 2016.

He is married to Kay Webb, who holds a Ph.D. in counseling psychology. They have two adult children.

The campus and community are cordially invited to attend. For more information, contact the Public Affairs office at 218-5270.
