The University of Pikeville, in partnership with Trivers Associates in St. Louis, Mo., and Ayers Saint Gross in Baltimore, Md., earned a Merit Award for the Health Professions Education Building from the 2017 AIA Kentucky Honor Awards Program, a society of the American Institute of Architects, in the category of New Construction: Greater than $15 million.

The building also received a Merit Award from the Saint Louis Chapter of the American Institute of Architects.

The awards recognize the achievement of excellence in the architectural design of the Health Professions Education Building. The $72 million educational facility is home to the Kentucky College of Optometry (KYCO), Elliott School of Nursing and a food court available to the campus and community. Sixty students will be admitted to KYCO per class for a total of 240. The university expects to provide for the underserved in Central Appalachia and other rural areas of the country.

AIA Kentucky, also known as Kentucky Society of Architects, is a non-profit professional organization representing the interests of and providing services to more than 600 Kentucky architects, architectural interns, affiliated design professionals and allied members.
