Phi Beta Lambda students excel at spring conference

The University of Pikeville chapter of Phi Beta Lambda (PBL) earned 12 awards in academic competition during the Spring Leadership Conference.

PBL members throughout Kentucky participated in workshops, academic competitions and election of state officers. Students who won awards in the state competition qualify to compete at the Phi Beta Lambda national leadership conference in Atlanta in June which will include participants from all 50 states and the U.S. territories.

“Our UPIKE students never fail to impress me. I couldn’t be more proud of how they represent the university, our PBL chapter and themselves,” said Lois M. Rogers, CPA, assistant professor of accounting. “I can’t wait to see how many national awards they bring back from Atlanta this summer.”

Nine UPIKE PBL students will represent the university in the national competition including:

First place:
Jessica Frazier of McPherson, Kan., client service
Chandra Hunley of Salyersville, microeconomics
Zane Maheu of Pikeville, personal finance
Jarred Thacker of Shelbiana, accounting for professionals

Second place:
Adam Hall of Shelbiana, cost accounting
Donald Anderson of Kingsland, Ga., personal finance
Enrico Marino of Lecherias Anzoalegui, Venezuela, international business

Third place:
Billy Cochran of Evarts, impromptu speaking and sales presentation
Sara Hall of Shelbiana, desktop publishing

Adam Hall and Thacker earned a first place team award in accounting analysis and decision making.

The UPIKE PBL chapter also received first place for the local chapter annual business report and the Hollis and Kitty Guy Gold Seal Chapter Award of Merit.

Billy Cochran was elected Kentucky PBL vice president for 2016-2017.
