Pikeville, Ky.
The community is invited to a special preview of “Khirbet el-Maqatir – A Journey Through Biblical History,” on Friday, March 11, at 11 a.m. at Pikeville City Hall.

Khirbet el-Maqatir – A Journey Through Biblical History is a walk-through exhibition of approximately 200 artifacts from ancient Israel and Jordan. Visitors will discover artifacts dating from as far back as 3000 B.C., throughout history and down to the time of Christ.

The exhibit, on display in Pikeville from January through June 2017, is a collaboration of the University of Pikeville Alumni Association and the City of Pikeville, along with archaeology partners Associates for Biblical Research (with permission of the Civil Administration of Samaria and Judea), and the Horn Archaeological Museum in Berrien Springs, Mich.

Within the wider scope of biblical history, visitors will also learn about the archaeology excavations at the site of Khirbet el-Maqatir. The evidence from the site indicates that Khirbet el-Maqatir is the biblical fortress of Ai - famous from the story of the Israelite conquest recorded in the book of Joshua. Artifacts from this site are on loan from the government of Israel and are unlikely to ever be exhibited again in the United States once they return to Israel.

The preview of the exhibit on March 11 is free and open to the public. Information about this historical collection and dates for other special events will also be announced.
