Collaborative practice enriches health care curriculum

More than 250 students and 33 facilitators from health care fields came together on the University of Pikeville campus with a common goal: to increase communication among health care professionals. The interprofessional education (IPE) event was designed for students, educators and professionals to work together to provide quality care.

Participation in interprofessional education events is incorporated in the curriculum of students who are completing coursework and will soon be entering health care fields. Students from the University of Pikeville-Kentucky College of Osteopathic Medicine (KYCOM), the Appalachian College of Pharmacy and UPIKE’s RN-BSN and associate degree nursing programs joined the sessions on campus. Frontier Nursing University’s family nurse practitioner program joined the event via video.

“I believe the students enjoyed meeting with students from different professions and have a better understanding of their roles and responsibilities,” said Robert Moore, MBA, EMTP, director of the simulation center at KYCOM. “As we continue to train together, our future health care providers will be better prepared to take care of the sick and injured in team-based practices.”

Representatives from each discipline participated in working groups to discuss their responsibilities in a medical case study and learn more about the roles other medical professionals play in providing patient care. Facilitated discussions were structured to open lines of communication and focus on how each profession collaborates to manage patient care.

The pilot program began in 2013 on the UPIKE campus when university nursing, social work and osteopathic medicine students came together as a mock health care team to create care plans for case study patients. Now a bi-annual event, the interprofessional education program has grown with the addition of the Appalachian College of Pharmacy and Frontier Nursing.
