UPIKE to host leading experts on retention, student success

The University of Pikeville will host Dr. John N. Gardner and Dr. Betsy O. Barefoot from the John N. Gardner Institute for Excellence in Undergraduate Education on Sept. 26 and 27.

As the nation’s leader in student success, Gardner and Barefoot have worked with colleges and universities across the country on retention. Along with several other scholars, they recently co-authored the book The Undergraduate Experience: Focusing Institutions on What Matters Most.

In addition to plenary sessions, students, faculty and staff will have opportunities to participate in breakout sessions.

“We look forward to having conversations as a campus community about retention and building upon the good work of our First Year Experience initiative and our work in Student Success,” said university Provost Lori Werth, Ph.D. “Strategic efforts are taking place as we continue to make an impact on our students through experiences in and out-of-classroom. We do this in our various roles as faculty, through athletics, and in the many other capacities that we interact with students. With the help of Gardner and Barefoot, our community will reflect on what we do well and how we can better develop the relationships that foster academic, social and emotional growth in those with whom we welcome into the UPIKE family.”
