Alumni Spotlight
Jesse Rudd II
"Since I was a small boy, I have always dreamed of following in my dad's footsteps and owning my own business someday. He never encouraged me to follow his career path in the coal industry. Rather, he always encouraged me to go to college, get a degree, and pursue my own passion."

ALUMnite James Browning
James Browning "I also learned from her [his mother] that faith is not something you constantly blab about or impose on others, but something you live, with integrity," he reflected. "I don't think of myself as anything other than an ordinary person who is trying to find some practical way to make the world a little better," said Browning.

Opening Convocation
On a joyous September day in 1889, the doors of Pikeville Collegiate Institute opened for the first time. David Blythe, a young Presbyterian minister and educator, had come to Pikeville to carry out the mission of the founders, Dr. William C. Condit and James P. Kendrick, who, along with Ebenezer Presbytery, shared a vision to provide educational opportunities for the youth of the mountains.
Be a part of AlumNite, our newest alumni initiative. Join Dr. Eric Becher as a small group of alumni in your area gather together at your favorite restaurant for dinner.

  Dear Bears Fan,

Welcome to UPIKENEWS, the official newsletter of the University of Pikeville Alumni Association.

The students have returned...and in record numbers! What a terrific start to the new school year. Classes are in full swing, the Coal Building for our medical students is open, the campus community is enjoying the new cafeteria, and athletes are using the new Hoops Athletic Facility. If you have not been on campus for a while, you should consider returning for Homecoming/Parents Weekend on September 28-29. Come see the new facilities, meet our students, say hello to the faculty, and reconnect with other UPIKE alums.

As valued alumni, we want to hear about you and include your stories in upcoming issues of the newsletter. Please send us your stories and pictures and help us celebrate our UPIKE alumni. Please check out the "Save the Date" section of the newsletter for upcoming events.

On behalf of the Alumni Association and the University of Pikeville community, Go Bears!

Student Spotlight
Kayla Brown

Kayla BrownIt is often said that you should "never judge a book by its cover." I have learned this first hand from one of my teammates this past year...Kayla is an aspiring doctor. When she is not at softball, she studies Biology and Chemistry constantly. She has a life-long friend who suffers from Cystic Fibrosis and plans to be the person that finds a cure for Cystic Fibrosis.

Spiritual Life
Transformational Involvement with the Global Community
Amy Carmichael once said, "You can give without loving. But you cannot love without giving." Often times we invite students to change the world or give sacrificially to many worthy causes, yet we fail to first provide opportunities to experience and express love. Jesus said that love is the sign that his followers are connected to him and John said that love is the very character of God.

Pres. Patton on Fr. Ralph Beiting

As a trustee, Father Beiting would gladly tell others why he, a Catholic monsignor, was happy to promote a Protestant college saying, 'I have been deeply impressed by the courageous men and women of God, no matter what their religious affiliation, who strive to bring about a change that no one thought possible.

Alumni Shorts
From time to time we receive short blurbs and stories from our readers. This section will showcase those stories, and give a voice to our alums. Be sure to check back each new post, maybe you'll read the story of an old classmate.
