Donor Challenge
It's that time again! Due to the rivalry basketball game between GC Tigers and the UPIKE Bears on February 7th, we're holding an online competition again this year with our second annual Social Media Donor Participation Challenge. Last year the GC alumni came through beating our UPIKE alumni 85-16. We can do better than that!

The Last Men
Major Roy Rogers '98
Last Men
Major Roy Rogers, a 1998 UPIKE graduate, was recently featured in "The Last Men" a story by The New Republic.

When Charlie Troop went out on missions, Major Roy Rogers usually liked to ride in the lead vehicle. But early on the morning of May 7, 2012, it looked like the scheduled patrol might be called off. It had rained during the night and, if the ground was too muddy, the heavy armored trucks ran a risk of becoming stuck. Rogers and the 100-odd men comprising Charlie Troop had been...

Alltech Innovation Competition
In May 2012, Dr. Pearse Lyons, president and founder of Alltech, issued a challenge to create jobs in the Commonwealth and spur economic development in Eastern Kentucky. On Jan. 19, three universities - University of Pikeville, University of Louisville and University of Kentucky - rose to that challenge at the Alltech Innovation Competition, proposing a diverse array of economic development solutions.

Students Attend
Presidential Inauguration

by Kayla Morgan
The inauguration ceremony each for years is a special moment in our nation's history. This year, Dr. Nancy Cade led six University of Pikeville students to Washington, D.C. for The Washington Center Seminar: Presidential Inauguration 2013. This seminar allowed the students to listen to a group of amazing speakers, tour various historical sites in the capital, and experience the city during inauguration time.

Research Opportunities
Higher education across the nation is moving toward teaching students by engaging them with real-world problems and using research as a means of experiential learning.

Be a part of AlumNite, our newest alumni initiative. Join Dr. Eric Becher as a small group of alumni in your area gather together at your favorite restaurant for dinner. If you're interested in hosting an AlumNite in your town contact the Office of Alumni Relations at Alumni@upike.edu or (606) 218-5296.

From the re-acquisition of the Training-Academy building to the Hobbs Collection Exhibition, there are so many compelling stories this month to discover about the students, faculty, staff, and alumni of UPIKE. Spiritual Life
Life Changing...UPIKE's Time in Haiti
The words "life changing" are often used, but not often actualized. The recent trip of 16 UPIKE students to Port-au-Prince, Haiti was truly a "life changing" experience.
Donors Honored in Lexington

On Friday, Jan. 26, a group of UPIKE supporters gathered in Lexington, Kentucky to enjoy a fun, social night at the Idle Hour Country Club.

The Hobbs Collections
At the Weber Art Gallery

Unknown Bycyclists
For more than a century, images of our ancestors and intriguing pieces of Pike County history have remained unidentified. For the first time in nearly 20 years these images will be made available for public viewing.
The Marguerite Weber Art Gallery at the University of Pikeville is currently hosting "The Hobbs Collection," a series of photographic images from the late 1800s through the mid-1900s that were on display in the Hobbs General Store formerly located on Main Street in Pikeville.

Faculty & Staff
Professional Activities
Our faculty and staff work hard to maintain a strong professional standard. Seven of UPIKE's finest faculty and staff have recently been published or attended conferences to enhance their effectiveness in the classroom.

Expressions of Nature
A Call for Art Entries

The University of Pikeville Weber Gallery is calling for entries for "Expressions of Nature," a community-wide exhibit. Local artists, both professional and student, are invited to submit their creative projects for inclusion in the exhibit.
The theme of all entries should reflect the artist's interpretation of "Expressions of Nature" and must be original works of art. Artists must be at least 16-years-old.
