David Lester '71 
LesterAlumnus David Lester of Pikeville, Ky. will become the next Superintendent of Pike County Schools this August. Lester, a 35-year veteran of the Pike County School System, was elected during a special meeting on June 4, 2013 by a majority vote of the Pike County Board of Education. Lester is a serving member of the UPIKE Alumni Association's Board of Directors.

Earning high marks for affordability, the University of Pikeville-Kentucky College of Osteopathic Medicine is fourth among the 10 least expensive private medical schools in the nation.

When I think about the scope of my experience here at the university, the first thing that comes to mind is all the progress that has happened during the past four years. We were a college four years ago, not a university. None of the student-athletes who call themselves national champions today were champions four years ago. The Coal Building was nonexistent.

The Alumni Facebook page posts a weekly "Who Am I?" picture. We hope to identify some of the alumni who have made us what we are. Last month we identified several alumni and photos including Candace Tackett Keene, Jamie Enomoto Baisden
, and Harry Waits' dance class.

Caribbean Getaway  
Cruise with the Alumni Association 
Join the UPIKE Alumni Association for a Caribbean Getaway next March 2014. The cruise will be 8 nights aboard Royal Caribbean's Independence of the Seas.

Ports of call include: Fort Lauderdale, Fla.; Philipsburg, St. Maarten; Basseterre, St. Kitts; San Juan, Puerto Rico; and Labadee, Haiti.

Doug and Barbara met and married while attending college. They loved their time at school; it provided them with many fond memories that have lasted throughout their lifetime. Studying in the library together, going on long walks around campus, attending concerts and cheering on the home team at sporting events - it was truly a wonderful beginning to more than 50 years of a loving relationship.

Top Nurses at PMC


Pikeville Medical Center recognized its top nurses. The Nurse of the Year award winners were chosen because they go above and beyond by providing exemplary care, day after day," said Mary Ellen Smith, Senior AVP/Assistant Chief Nursing Officer. "They are the best of the best, and we are happy and proud to have this opportunity to recognize them." Several UPIKE nurses were among those honored.

Students Honored for Academics 
Dean's List Spring 2013 

Dean's List University of Pikeville Dean and Vice President for Academic Affairs Thomas R. Hess has released the names of the top students in the College of Arts and Sciences for the spring 2013 semester. To qualify for the Dean's List, students must receive a grade point average of 3.5 (B+) or better.

UPIKE junior Brittany Rowe, of Pikeville, was among the 17 queen candidates from colleges and universities across the commonwealth participating in the Kentucky Mountain Laurel Festival. Rowe was escorted during the festival by Pineville native Brent Slusher, a senior majoring in business administration at UPIKE.
