As the University of Pikeville marks its 128th year, join us on the hill for Homecoming Week, Oct. 23-28.

The week begins with “Documenting the Region: Symposium on Appalachian Studies and Documentary Film Screening of ‘Linefork.’” The film follows the daily rituals of an elderly couple living in Kentucky’s Appalachian Mountains. The screening will be held on Monday, Oct. 23, at 6:30 p.m., in the Health Professions Education Building, seventh floor.

UPIKE alumnus Scottie Adkins, class of 2011, will be the speaker for the homecoming chapel service on Tuesday, Oct. 24, at 11 a.m., in Meditation Chapel, Record Memorial Building.

Wednesday, Oct. 25, has been designated as a “Day of Service.”

On Thursday the campus will celebrate Founders’ Day with a picnic and games at 11 a.m., in Benefactors Plaza. Also at 11 a.m., Dr. Fred Foy, Presbyterian Missionary, will present “Interconnectivity of All Things” in Record Memorial Building, Booth Auditorium. Later that evening, the university will honor individuals whose contributions in education have made a significant and lasting impact on hundreds of students’ lives during the Distinguished Educators Hall of Fame ceremony. The community is invited to attend the event beginning at 6 p.m., in Booth Auditorium, located in Record Memorial Building, level five. Following the ceremony, the campus will glow with luminaries for the traditional Lighting of the Campus at 7 p.m.

The campus will celebrate a milestone in the university’s history with a dedication and ribbon cutting for the Health Professions Education Building, the new educational facility housing the Kentucky College of Optometry. The ceremony will be held on Friday, Oct. 27, at 2 p.m., outside of the sixth floor entrance to the Health Professions Education Building on upper campus. Reception and tours will follow.

Additional activities scheduled for Friday, Oct. 27, include a communication alumni panel discussion at 11 a.m., in Chrisman Auditorium, Armington Learning Center. The women’s and men’s soccer teams will face Shawnee State University at Bob Amos Soccer Complex at 6 p.m. and 8 p.m. The campus and community will come together for “A Way Back to Then,” a concert celebrating Broadway show tunes and classical favorites with sopranos Kelsea Webb and Anna Buck. The performance begins at 7 p.m. in Booth Auditorium, Record Memorial Building. Admission is free.

The men’s basketball team will host the UPIKE Tipoff Classic and on Central Penn at 8 p.m., on Friday, Oct. 27, before facing Florida National on Saturday, Oct. 28, at 7:30 p.m. Games will be held in the UPIKE gym. -more-

The English department will host a literary reading with author Richard Underwood on Saturday, Oct. 28, at 9 a.m., in the Janice Ford Student Art Gallery, Allara Library. The volleyball team will host two matches facing Kentucky Christian at 11 a.m., and Tennessee Wesleyan at 3 p.m., at the UPIKE gym. Admission is free.

The action-packed Saturday continues as the Bears take the field against Reinhardt University at the Hambley Athletic Complex in Pikeville. Admission to the game includes an invitation to the tailgate at the Beargounds beginning at 11 a.m. Homecoming tailgate activities are sponsored by Food City, Pepsi Bottling Group, Aramark, and the University of Pikeville Alumni Association. Kick-off is set for 1:30 p.m. An alumni awards presentation will be held on the football field at 1 p.m. Distinguished alumni, honorary alumni, rising young alumni, volunteer of the year and the Gary Thrash Outstanding Ambassador awards will be presented. Admission to the football game is $8 for adults and $5 for students. University of Pikeville students are admitted free with UPIKE ID. Faculty and staff, and one guest, are also admitted free with ID. The Homecoming king and queen will be crowned during halftime of the football game.
