Student art featured at Weber Art Gallery
March 28, 2011 3:00 PM
PIKEVILLE, KY
The Weber Art Gallery at Pikeville College is currently featuring the works of graduating senior Gary Smith.
The senior art show meets part of the exit requirement for a graduating art major and is a reflection of the students’ development and interests. Smith’s show features a variety of media including sculptures, paintings and ink drawings.
“My college career has been dedicated to two areas of study. English was my first major, but during my sophomore year I decided to double major in English and art,” said Smith. “I felt that the history of literature, though different, shared a lot with the history of art. Art has helped me be more critical of literature because art has taught me to be analytical in other ways.”
Smith is a published author and a member of the Gamma Sigma Chi fraternity, art club, environmental club, academic team, men’s soccer team captain, writing center tutor, student orientation and registration leader and president of the Sigma Tau Delta International English Honor Society. He is the son of Gary and Rebecca Smith of Virgie.
“Gary’s show is an impressive testament of someone who has explored a range of ideas in a thoughtful and challenging manner. The show clearly demonstrates the potential of a fine, engaging, developing artist,” said Pat Kowalok, professor of art.
The art show will run through April 10. The community is cordially invited.
The Weber Art Gallery is located on the second floor of the Record Memorial Building at Pikeville College. Gallery hours are: Monday 10-11 a.m., noon-5 p.m.; Tuesday 9:30 a.m.-1 p.m., 1:30 p.m.-2:30 p.m.; Wednesday 10-11 a.m., noon-1 p.m., 2-5 p.m.; Thursday 9:30 a.m.-1p.m., 1:30-2:30 p.m., 3-5 p.m.; and Friday 10 a.m.-5 p.m. For more information contact Patricia Kowalok at 218-5758 or Petra Carroll at 218-5759.
