Pikeville College Upward Bound competes in scholar's bowl

March 16, 2011 2:00 PM
PIKEVILLE, KY
Two teams of students from Pikeville College’s Upward Bound program traveled to Kentucky State University to compete in the Kentucky Association of Educational Opportunity Program Personnel (KAEOPP) Scholar’s Bowl. The competition was part of the TRiO celebration held in Frankfort, Ky. The Pike County team finished third in the competition. Students participating include Bradley Sansom (Sheldon Clark High School), Brandon Jarrett (Sheldon Clark High School), Matthew Campbell, Samantha Cochran (Pikeville High School), Jordan Bentley (Shelby Valley High School), Chelsea Cantrell (Shelby Valley High School), Felecia Jones (Pike Central High School) and Jasmine Newman (Pike Central High School). Campbell and Bentley qualified for the Kentucky All-Stars Team in the Southeastern Association of Educational Opportunity Program Personnel (SAEOPP) Scholar’s Bowl in Atlanta in April.

Pikeville College Upward Bound is an outreach program for high school students in Pike, Floyd and Martin counties. The goal of the Upward Bound Program is to provide opportunities to learn more about college and campus life. Upward Bound helps students learn about campus life before attending college. High school seniors earn six Pikeville College credit hours through Upward Bound before entering the school of their choice.
