Exploring Dimensions: Student art featured at Weber Gallery

April 03, 2012 12:00 AM
Pikeville, KY
The Weber Art Gallery at the University of Pikeville is currently featuring the works of graduating senior Amy Lester, an exhibit titled “Scrutiny.”

The senior art show meets part of the exit requirement for a graduating art major and is a reflection of the student’s development and interests. Lester’s show features a variety of media including drawings, sculptures and paintings with the inclusion of both two-dimensional and three-dimensional design work.

“As a little girl I watched my grandfather create many works of art. I grew up with each of my birthday cards being hand painted and most of my toys handmade,” said Lester. “I would crawl into his lap and ask him to show me all of his tricks. It was then I began to fall in love with the world of art.”

Lester is the daughter of Kim and Steve Akers of Stone.

“Amy has stretched her technical comfort zone. She has challenged herself, her classmates–all of us–intellectually,” said Pat Kowalok, professor of art. “Amy is double majoring in art and math and has pursued these passions with spirited commitment. There is doing well at college according to the standards set by teachers. There is also doing well at your education according to your personal goals and standards. Amy has always set a much higher bar for herself regarding what she wants from her education.”

The art show will run through April 26. Lester will discuss her artwork during a reception on Friday, April 13, at 5 p.m. The community is cordially invited to the art show and reception.

The Weber Art Gallery is located on the second floor of the Record Memorial Building at the University of Pikeville. Gallery hours are: Monday 9 a.m. - 5 p.m.; Tuesday 9-11 a.m., noon- 5 p.m.; Wednesday 9 a.m.-2 p.m., 3-5 p.m.; Thursday 11 a.m.-5 p.m.; and Friday 9 a.m.-5 p.m. For more information contact Kowalok at 218-5758 or Petra Carroll at 218-5759.
