William T. Betz, D.O., MBA, FACOFP dist., has been named this year’s John A. Strosnider, D.O., Memorial Lecturer.

Betz was instrumental in the early development of the medical school. He served as acting dean, professor and chair of the department of family medicine at the University of Pikeville-Kentucky College of Osteopathic Medicine before retiring in July 2017.

The award acknowledges Betz’s service to the Kentucky College of Osteopathic Medicine (KYCOM) and the osteopathic profession. Presented annually, the award was established in honor of Strosnider, the medical school’s founding dean. Previous recipients include G. Chad Perry III, Burlin Coleman, Bennie Ray Bailey, Paul E. Patton, William H. Owens, Terry Dotson, Hal Smith and Walter E. May.

Medicine in the Mountains … Keeping the Promise: The Kentucky College of Osteopathic Medicine celebrates 20 years of “Keeping the Promise.” Since its inception in 1997, KYCOM has played an important role in preparing physicians to serve the healthcare needs of underserved populations in Kentucky and other Appalachian regions. Of the more than 1,000 graduates since the first class of physicians in 2001, 76 percent of these physicians are serving in primary care.
