Pikeville, Ky.

Applications are available for the University of Pikeville’s STEM Mini Camps. The program is sponsored by the EQT Foundation and will include a series of four two-day camps for students who will be enrolled in fifth through eighth grade in the 2017-2018 school year.

For more than 20 years, UPIKE has hosted the Math and Science Day Camp program offering students a quality education experience and hands-on excitement.

Fifth- and sixth-grade students can choose between two sessions on Monday, July 10, and Tuesday, July 11. During session one, “Geology,” participants will investigate the process of the rock cycle by participating in hands-on experiments and activities. Campers will create their own models of metamorphic, igneous and sedimentary rocks by simulating the real-life process for the geologic formations. In session two, “Puzzles and Games,” students will explore hands-on, as well as with some probability theory, how to determine attacks in the game Risk, how to increase chances of leaving fewer pegs in a peg puzzle and how to solve the Rubik’s Cube one layer at a time.

Two sessions will be available to seventh- and eighth-grade students on Wednesday, July 12, and Thursday, July 13. During session one, “All About Arthropods,” students will learn about arthropod natural history and biodiversity through a series of fun projects and activities, including experiments and dissections. Each participant will get his or her own live arthropod to take home. Session two will explore “Cryptography.” Students will be introduced to many different encryption techniques and receive hands-on practice with substitution, keyword, Vigenere and several other cyphers. Paper and pencil and computer tools for encryption, decryption and code-breaking will be used.

Each session will be limited to 20 students. The registration fee of $50 per session includes all activities, lunch and a camp T-shirt. Sessions will be held from 8:30 a.m.-3 p.m. each of the two days. Information and application materials are now available and may be accessed at http://drfizx.com/camp.htm. All application materials should be completed and submitted online using the links found on the camp website. Volunteer application materials can also be accessed and completed online.
