Why Take ROTC?

Leadership development that lasts a lifetime
Students at the University of Pikeville are provided the opportunity not only for a quality education, but the challenge of character building, critical thinking and the finest leadership training through Army ROTC. These skills set students apart from their contemporaries and are vital to success in civilian and military careers.

Few programs can transform you the way Army ROTC does. Army ROTC (Reserve Officers Training Corps) is one of the most prestigious and widely recognized leadership organizations in the country and the largest provider of the framework, tools and training to lead others, motivate groups and conduct missions as an officer of the Army.

Those who choose to complete the training will have the opportunity to serve as officers on active duty, the National Guard or Army Reserves.

Career of your choice
Army ROTC prepares college students to succeed in any competitive environment. The leadership training and experiences that students have in Army ROTC will provide them with a foundation to become commissioned Army Officers upon graduation.

Upon completion of the Army ROTC program, graduates will be commissioned as second lieutenants in the Army in either the active duty, National Guard or Reserve components. These officers will receive specialized training in their assigned fields and opportunities for post graduate education. Those who chose to continue will be provided the opportunity for a career of service.

ROTC pays in more ways than one
ROTC offers a variety of ways to pay for college through scholarships and other opportunities. ROTC scholarships are some of the best college scholarships available and cover most of your education to include full tuition, books and a living allowance.

ROTC provides some of the best leadership training in the world. Employers everywhere recognize the value of hiring officers with proven, real world leadership skills and experience. ROTC provides students a real advantage in the job market.

Beyond the classroom
While classes will help develop individual leadership and group problem solving, the Army ROTC out-of-classroom labs let you get active and outdoors with ...
  • Rappelling
  • Rifle marksmanship
  • Obstacle courses
  • Land navigation

Contracted students can also participate in adventure training in airborne, air assault and mountain warfare training schools. The unique skill-set provided by the Army ROTC prepares students to tenaciously tackle the future in military or civilian life.

Who are we looking for?
We are looking for the same kind of individuals that other top organizations seek: scholars, athletes and leaders. If you enjoy a challenging environment, consider yourself a leader and consider integrity, selflessness, toughness and courage to be attributes you have or desire, then you will succeed in UPIKE’s Army ROTC program.

The 100 and 200 level classes are open as electives to all UPIKE students with no commitment or obligation. These classes teach basic life and leadership skills. They are a great fit as electives or for students curious about ROTC and the Army.

The 300 and 400 level classes are for students who have contracted and joined the ROTC program. They teach advanced leadership and prepare students to serve as officers in United States Army.
