What is Bear Alert?

The University of Pikeville has partnered with Wireless Emergency Notification System (WENS) to offer an emergency notification system, Bear Alert, capable of sending users text, voice and email messages.

What type of messages will I receive?

The University of Pikeville will only send you messages related to emergencies. You will never receive advertisements and your information is never provided to advertisers.

Who can subscribe/use the service?

Any student, staff or faculty member of the University of Pikeville can subscribe to the Bear Alert service. 

Can I register via text message?

Yes. Simply text "BEAR ALERT" to 69310.

Does Bear Alert cost anything to use?

No. Bear Alert is a free service provided by UPIKE. However, normal message fees may apply.

How can my parents receive Bear Alerts?

You can register up to five phone numbers and five email addresses per upike.edu or pc.edu email address.

I do not use text messages. How can I receive Bear Alerts?

You can register your email address and/or your phone number to receive voice messages.

What mobile phone carriers are supported?

All U.S. mobile carriers are supported.

What if my cell phone number changes?

If your mobile number ever changes, please login to the Bear Alert site and update your contact details.

What if my cell phone provider changes?

If you keep the same mobile number, and simply change your cell phone provider, you do not have to change anything; however, it may take several weeks for your mobile provider to update the Bear Alert system.

Will I receive advertisements or text messaging SPAM?

No. Never. We respect your privacy and you will never receive anything other than official University of Pikeville communications.

Who do I contact for assistance or for more information?

If you need assistance, please contact the University of Pikeville Police Department at 606.218.5940.

How will I identify incoming messages from Bear Alert?

You will be sent messages from what are known as short codes. The messages will come from either 69310 for text messages and 606.218.5940 for voice notifications. We encourage you to save these numbers into your phone so you will recognize them when messages are sent.

How do I stop getting messages?

To stop receiving messages, you may login to the Bear Alert site and click unsubscribe at the bottom of the site or text "STOP" to 69310.
