Kathy Fleming Magnes '92

magnes Magnes' life was forever changed after that week of volunteerism. "No one could witness these people's day-to-day lives without vowing to return. My supportive husband, along with several of his engineer co-workers, have now volunteered their services to return with me and my steadily-growing team of healthcare professionals to Guatemala, where we hope to touch even more lives, and build many more homes. My hope is that, in doing so, I can become that pivotal point in many other people's lives."

Massie
Garland Cleek
"I've met a lot of people at UPIKE who have helped me mature and grow. I feel ready to enter the adult world," said Cleek. He will certainly have the support of the UPIKE community as he moves on and represents the University as a member of the Class of 2014.

Despite his taste of fame, his ambition was always to return home and teach music. Caudill, who is known only as "Jim Andy" to his students and admirers, taught music at Ashland High School [...] before seeking and accepting a position at Pikeville College, where he taught for decades and influenced generations of musicians who followed his advice as if it were gospel.

Thank You from Afghanistan

I often think the cultural understanding gained through literature should be required of young officers who find themselves in the role of ambassador, rather than soldier, in these far off places and tribal villages of southwest Asia.

Dear Bear,

Welcome to UPIKENEWS, the official newsletter of the University of Pikeville Alumni Association.

The fall semester has begun! With a record number of students on campus this week, UPIKE is off to an exciting start to the year. Check out the upcoming AlumNite events, follow President Hurley on Twitter, view your class yearbook online, join us as our football team travels to Morehead State University to take on the Eagles, and read the compelling stories included on this month's enewsletter. The Alumni Mystery Pictures series continues as we search for the identities of students of yesteryear. With your help, we have already identified several mystery photos and put names to faces. Check our Facebook page for updates on these unidentified alumni.

As valued alumni, we want to hear about you and include your stories in upcoming issues of the newsletter. Please send us your stories and pictures and help us celebrate our UPIKE alumni. Are you still using the Foss Tecator Soxtec* System 2043 Extraction Unit that you purchased several years ago? If not, then please view the Want Ads section of the website and consider donating this equipment. If you have been away from campus for too long, check out the Save the Date section for upcoming events and the schedule of AlumNites coming to a city near you.

Zachary Combs
"The lack of a parental figure during my childhood encouraged me to mature faster and become a better-rounded adult, since I learned most lessons on my own." Persevering despite being raised in a single-parent household is, in Combs' opinion, a hurdle he overcame that has lent to his reputation of being an outstanding student and dependable individual.

College Students & the Local Church

The growing appreciation for diversity and individual expression is the most contentious issue between Millennials and local churches. Oftentimes, Millennials see the local church as a place of exclusion, intolerance, and arrogance. This generation is hungry for humble leaders and an attitude of investigation rather than indoctrination.

"I didn't realize how much hands-on experience we would have," said Emily Altman, a junior at Pikeville High School. "At Pikeville Medical Center we got to see more than volunteers get to see. I had the opportunity to witness various surgical procedures. This was an experience you don't have unless you go to medical school."
