Writing Center

The mission of the University of Pikeville Writing Center is based on the belief that clear and concise writing reflects the ability to think clearly and express thoughts precisely, something our students should demonstrate before they graduate. To that end, the Writing Center supports writing in all disciplines during all four years of college.

The Writing Center provides free tutorial service to students enrolled in any courses offered by the college and supports faculty with workshops, materials and ideas for writing assignments in content areas. With the help of peer writing consultants, students who come for help will be better writers, will have more confidence in their own abilities, and most importantly, will develop more positive attitudes toward writing. We believe that as educated readers and writers, students will more likely look for connections among all of their life’s pursuits and the world around them. With constant feedback from faculty and students, the Writing Center demonstrates the crucial position of writing.

Location and Information

Allara Library 302

The Writing Center is open Monday through Friday for students to drop-in. Appointments can be scheduled by e-mailing SydneyEngland@upike.edu. Hours and tutor schedules are posted each semester on the door of the Writing Center.

Students requesting help may fill out a Tutor Request Form which identifies the areas for which they are seeking help; they may continue tutoring for as long as they need. All abilities of writers receive help in the center.

Students from all majors who have A’s and B’s in their English sequence are invited to apply to become tutors. Writing Center tutors not only help their students become better writers and develop more positive attitudes toward writing, but they receive valuable practice honing their own writing and people skills. Students are supervised and training is ongoing and mandatory. Hours are flexible and pay is minimum wage.

All application forms and brochures describing the program are located beside the door of LIB 302.

Professors assigning students to the writing center for tutoring can better ensure that their students will have a more successful experience by completing the following two tasks:
1. Always send thorough explanations of any assignments with specific expectations to SydneyEngland@upike.edu before dispatching the student.
2. Review the “Writing Center Notes” sent to all faculty at the first of each semester (you may request a copy from SydneyEngland@upike.edu).
