For more than a decade, The Bear Facts has been a mainstay on the University of Pikeville campus. As the official newsletter for the University of Pikeville faculty, staff and students, it was established in the fall of 1996 by a group of volunteers who dreamed of having a forum for student expression.

Two student editors, Mindy Robertson and Stephanie Warrix, oversaw the original production. They received neither credit nor compensation for their work. They just wished to serve the University of Pikeville community. The Office of External Affairs (now known as the Office of Public Affairs) assisted the students and distributed the weekly newsletter across campus.

Today, Chandra Massner, associate professor of communication, supervises students in three courses: COM/ENG 220: Introduction to Journalism, COM 310: Principles of Editing and Design and COM/ENG 321: Publications Practicum, in order to publish the campus’ weekly news publication. She coordinates with the Office of Public Affairs which handles the final production and distribution. From start to finish, students cover, write and edit news for the University of Pikeville community. Students in these courses learn how to research and write articles as student reporters, how to edit and design visually appealing pages as graphic artists and how to proof and edit stories and pages as student editors while they get a taste of what it is like to work in a working newsroom.

Working on The Bear Facts is an integral and required part of the Communication degree requirements at the University of Pikeville, but students in all majors and backgrounds take part in crafting The Bear Facts. Students of any major are welcome to enroll in the courses that produce the college newsletter.

The Bear Facts remains a student publication with its central focus to report on-campus activities and events. It is distributed regularly on Tuesdays. The online version of The Bear Facts is available here on the University of Pikeville Web site. An archive of the current semester’s issues is also available. You will need your the University of Pikeville username and password to view the publications.

If you have information about upcoming events or items that may interest the campus community, please submit them to bearfacts@upike.edu for possible publication. Signed letters to the editor are also accepted and encouraged. From sports to classes, clubs and student activities, you can count on The Bear Facts to bring you the facts.
