Welcome to the University of Pikeville

Located in the heart of the Central Appalachian Mountains, Pikeville is a small urban oasis in a landscape that is as breathtaking as it is rural. The university, or UPIKE as we prefer to call it, boasts academic and co-curricular opportunities that take full advantage of its idyllic location. Our undergraduate programs are designed to help students understand their calling in life, pursue it with passion and leave with the skills to live well in their chosen profession. We believe strongly in helping students understand their place in an ever-changing world.

Nearly half of our undergraduate students participate in extracurricular athletics, nearly half of our undergraduate students are studying for careers in medicine, education, nursing or business, and nearly three-quarters of the graduate student population is enrolled in either osteopathic medicine (D.O.) or optometry (O.D.).

We are a thriving university in a progressive town. Pikeville is among a small number of cities in
Appalachia that is growing, has a diverse economic base, and is moving into the 21st century. Add that to the abundance of outdoor recreational opportunities and you will find not only a place to learn, but also a place to live after college. We believe this is a great place to be.

Students from across Central Appalachia and beyond recognize that UPIKE is one of the region’s best values. While many colleges are rethinking their price and scholarship structure, UPIKE has worked to maintain a reasonable tuition and still manages to offer significant scholarships to every student who applies. Attractive need- and merit-based aid packages, as well as athletic scholarships, can be added to programs such as the Kentucky Educational Excellence Scholarship (KEES), the Kentucky Higher Education Assistance Authority (KHEAA), and UPIKE’s own Pikeville Promise to further assist students as they consider the value and investment portion of the college decision.

Dynamic and innovative leadership has brought recent changes in the administration of the university and significant investments to residence halls, academic programs and student services. Over the next few years, even more changes will take place on our campus. The recently completed campus master plan calls for new residence halls, athletic facilities and a student center. Once students and parents come and walk through our safe community and inviting facilities, once they see our state-of-the-art education facilities, and once they sit in the shade of our great mountains they will agree that this is an exciting time to be a Bear!
